[2009/06/25 00:25:09] * proton is sad that whatever version of ActiveRecord/rails Apple includes in Leopard doesn't work with puppet storedconfigs :(
[2009/06/25 00:29:52] @ mfoster joined channel #puppet
[2009/06/25 00:30:04] <joe-mac> proton: puppet is used on osx on a large scale, i'm guessing there;'s way around whatever bad behavior you're seeing
[2009/06/25 00:30:50] @ Quit: nawty_:

[2009/06/25 00:43:14] <kennobaka> so I've been looking at the storeconfigs info on the wiki; if we're not using exported resources, is there any benefit to storing the configs in a db?
[2009/06/25 00:43:45] <kennobaka> it sounds like the manifest gets compiled anyway whenever a client asks for it, and then that gets compared to what's in the database
[2009/06/25 00:43:47] @ mfoster joined channel #puppet
[2009/06/25 00:44:14] <joe-mac> there is ac ertain advantage to having any kind of data in a database
[2009/06/25 00:44:40] <joe-mac> unless it's somthing trivial, of course
[2009/06/25 00:44:57] <kennobaka> well, compile + compare will certainly take more time than compile alone
[2009/06/25 00:47:11] <proton> joe-mac: this is if you're running the puppetmaster on OS X Server with the default apple activerecord/rails
[2009/06/25 00:47:28] <proton> joe-mac: rails generates bad SQL for the queries to get exported records out
[2009/06/25 00:48:19] <joe-mac> kennobaka: i guess it depends on if reporting or automating other parts of your infrastructure is important to you
[2009/06/25 00:48:40] <joe-mac> i currently don't use storedconfigs but i'm going to do a pilot at home to understand it then do it at work, cause i'm sick of manually configuring nagios
[2009/06/25 00:50:24] <proton> yeah, I was looking at it to automatically export ssh host keys instead of me having to do do them manually
[2009/06/25 00:51:08] <proton> but the queries that are generated are wrong, sticks a comma between INNER JOIN clauses
[2009/06/25 00:52:07] @ mfoster left channel #puppet ()
[2009/06/25 00:52:10] <joe-mac> proton: have you looked to see if this is a known bug? or if people work around it somehow?
[2009/06/25 00:55:33] <proton> I haven't found anything useful when looking
[2009/06/25 00:57:48] <joe-mac> you might wantt o ask nigelk about this. he is a mac ghuy
[2009/06/25 00:57:52] <joe-mac> he's not here right now
[2009/06/25 00:58:06] <joe-mac> but he has a pretty impressive mac background
[2009/06/25 00:58:18] <proton> yeah, I get the feeling from the errors that it's going to be a bug in ActiveRecord
[2009/06/25 00:58:29] <proton> should have beaten him up at wwdc over that actually :)
[2009/06/25 00:59:26] <joe-mac> heh
[2009/06/25 00:59:40] <joe-mac> none of the cool stuff is ont his side of the states, all over there on the left coast

[2009/06/25 01:00:00] <proton> Leopard has Rails 1.2.6, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bug in it
[2009/06/25 01:00:02] <MrProper_> Hey all
[2009/06/25 01:00:17] <proton> but I really don't want to go installing custom rails versions to try and fix it, not worth it for me at the moment

[2009/06/25 01:01:24] <joe-mac> whats up MrProper_
[2009/06/25 01:03:10] <MrProper_> Im just about to post a message on the mailling list that i am doing a talk on puppet and infrastructure automation at this years SAGE-AU conference
[2009/06/25 01:04:04] <joe-mac> sweet
[2009/06/25 01:04:16] <joe-mac> like a request for comments
[2009/06/25 01:04:47] <MrProper_> more so just to get the word out to anyone in australia starting out with puppet
[2009/06/25 01:05:07] <joe-mac> o i c, jamesturnbull is from australia
[2009/06/25 01:05:26] <joe-mac> i hear you don't wanna mess with that guy...
[2009/06/25 01:05:29] <joe-mac> lol jk
[2009/06/25 01:06:00] <MrProper_> yeah, wonder if hes around atm
[2009/06/25 01:06:21] <Djelibeybi> MrProper_: no, he's not (AFAIK)
[2009/06/25 01:06:26] <Djelibeybi> MrProper_: he went afk a while ago
[2009/06/25 01:06:30] <MrProper_> ta
[2009/06/25 01:06:59] <Djelibeybi> MrProper_: though I did ask him if he knew who you were when I saw the SAGE-AU programme
[2009/06/25 01:07:00] <Djelibeybi> :)
[2009/06/25 01:07:19] <MrProper_> Djelibeybi, lol
[2009/06/25 01:07:43] <MrProper_> Djelibeybi, i've talked to him a few times over the last couple years
[2009/06/25 01:07:56] <MrProper_> Djelibeybi, but only via irc
[2009/06/25 01:08:02] <Djelibeybi> MrProper_: he's not coming to SAGE, so you're probably safe. ;-)
[2009/06/25 01:08:14] * Djelibeybi is doing a tutorial and a presentation this year
[2009/06/25 01:08:23] <MrProper_> Djelibeybi, oh really, which ones?
[2009/06/25 01:08:37] <Djelibeybi> I'm doing the full-day Asterisk tutorial and the Oracle On Demand case study presentation
[2009/06/25 01:11:00] <MrProper_> Djelibeybi, ahh nice
[2009/06/25 01:11:32] <MrProper_> Djelibeybi, my talk is going to be pretty basic for anyone whos used puppet for a bit
[2009/06/25 01:13:56] <joe-mac> i think a lot of people just need a good intro to see how powerful it is, and they'll start using it/migrating to it
[2009/06/25 01:15:08] <MrProper_> joe-mac, agreed it would be pointless to go into great detail in 25 minutes, but its more understanding why the old ways suck so much (ie push/pull hand crafted scripts)

I'm having a devil of a time with the Perl script in 10.5 Server on the Mac.....it won't import the directory to the YAML perl module into @INC, so I'm trying to hand tune it....and then it doesn't like the call to the Dump subroutine. <sigh>

[2009/06/25 17:27:51] <Volcane> n3kl_: basically its like zeroconf, u tell the munin server a client exists, the mnin box then asks the client what plugins it has, what data each plugin provides and even how to present that data tot eh suer
[2009/06/25 17:28:15] <Cuchulain> hrm

[2009/06/25 17:41:52] <Cuchulain> hrm
[2009/06/25 17:42:58] <Volcane> n3kl_: all u need to do is store /etc/puppet/manifests (for example) in svn and arrange for a checkout on the master
[2009/06/25 17:43:48] <joe-mac> n3kl_: unfortunately you can;'t use svn in the source => parameter, but you could have a local checkout of it that is updated automgically
[2009/06/25 17:46:47] <n3kl_> so if its checked out to /dist or something, do I jsut symliny /etc/puppet to /dist/puppet?
[2009/06/25 17:47:00] <n3kl_> *symlink
[2009/06/25 17:48:03] <joe-mac> n3kl_: oh i thought you meant you are moving to puppet and have all your existing configs in svn
[2009/06/25 17:48:13] <joe-mac> if you mean you have puppet itself in svn, svn export should do the trick
[2009/06/25 17:48:57] @ Quit: egerlach: Read error: 113 (No route to host)
[2009/06/25 17:48:59] @ Quit: f3ew: Read error: 113 (No route to host)
[2009/06/25 17:49:11] <Volcane> best approach is to only check out the manifests - not the entire /etc/puppet - and to use puppetd to configure the /etc/puppet files
[2009/06/25 17:50:11] @ egerlach_ is now known as egerlach
[2009/06/25 17:51:15] <n3kl_> Well, I am not sure how to do this really. I have all the configs in subversion. I started down the cfengine road, and then got convinced somehow that puppet is the answer and now I am here. I folowed the advanced recepie that walks you through the sudo module, but I don't know where to go from here?
[2009/06/25 17:51:37] <n3kl_> Do I create modules for everything I want to configure? Or classes or what?
[2009/06/25 17:51:48] <Volcane> n3kl_: modules for everything, each module is a brick
[2009/06/25 17:51:52] <Volcane> n3kl_: many bricks makes a box
[2009/06/25 17:52:14] <n3kl_> Do I need to have my subversion repo checked out on every machine, or can I keep only svn on the server, and have all clients use the server to get updated configs?
[2009/06/25 17:52:33] <agaffney> I do the latter
[2009/06/25 17:52:39] <Volcane> only on the master
[2009/06/25 17:52:40] <agaffney> but it depends on how you set it up
[2009/06/25 17:53:03] <n3kl_> I would prefer to have only the svn checked out on the server, and have all clients point to it for the config data
[2009/06/25 17:53:17] <agaffney> that's the ideal way
[2009/06/25 17:53:22] <Volcane> the cleints speak puppet protocol to the master typically
[2009/06/25 17:53:33] <Volcane> so the code, config, logic etc, all sits on the master
[2009/06/25 17:54:01] <n3kl_> So, with the sudo example that was given in the recepie, it looks like i have to store the actual config files in the module folder. Is there a way that I can point to the config directory or something?
[2009/06/25 17:54:26] <n3kl_> Volcane: so like source => puppet://server.lan/files/etc/sudoers?
[2009/06/25 17:54:30] <n3kl_> or something
[2009/06/25 17:54:32] <agaffney> I keep my entire /etc/puppet in svn
[2009/06/25 17:54:43] <n3kl_> agaffney: that is my goal also
[2009/06/25 17:54:55] <Volcane> n3kl_: yes, but its ultimately best to keep the all things related to sudo - puppet logic, teplates and configs - all in the module
[2009/06/25 17:55:08] <n3kl_> I see
[2009/06/25 17:55:34] <n3kl_> So you say that the module is a brick, so what if I need this brick to belong to many blocks? Is this common?
[2009/06/25 17:55:46] <n3kl_> I am just not clear on the role of the module in all of this?
[2009/06/25 17:55:47] <Volcane> if u ahve say a cacti module
[2009/06/25 17:55:54] <Volcane> it could require that the apache module is active on the box
[2009/06/25 17:56:04] <Volcane> on the node you include both cacti and apache
[2009/06/25 17:56:57] <n3kl_> So you could have a kerberos+ldap module then also, and for every node you want to configure, you would just include that module?
[2009/06/25 17:57:27] <Volcane> yes
[2009/06/25 17:57:31] @ randybias|away is now known as randybias
[2009/06/25 17:57:45] <n3kl_> What determines the scope of the module? Do I call it, authentication module, and wrap up ldap+kerberos in one, or split them up?
[2009/06/25 17:57:46] <Volcane> and i have like a common::linux class that includes many std modules i put on all my linux machines
[2009/06/25 17:58:25] <n3kl_> Volcane: so what sort of things go in your common::linux module? motd stuff or more than that?
[2009/06/25 17:58:37] <n3kl_> to me common::linux would include things like sudo, no?
[2009/06/25 17:59:30] <n3kl_> Volcane: wait, you said class. Are classes and modules different?

[2009/06/25 18:00:28] @ Quit: kngus: "Leaving."
[2009/06/25 18:00:29] <Volcane> n3kl_: modules are collections of related classes, plugins, templates and files
[2009/06/25 18:00:35] <Volcane> n3kl_: see http://pastie.org/524808
[2009/06/25 18:01:09] <Volcane> thats some of my stuff, see how the node includes all sorts of apache stuff and then smokeping
[2009/06/25 18:01:20] <Volcane> smokeping module would fail if it cant find the apache stuff already there
[2009/06/25 18:01:46] <Volcane> so by making modles per function/building block you can just gradually build up to a full end to end node build
[2009/06/25 18:01:55] <Volcane> with massive code reuse between all your machines

[2009/06/25 21:56:28] <ctso> fujin: puppetlast is freaking awesome
[2009/06/25 21:56:38] <n3kl> okay, the server is up and listening now. Reading logs to find out why it doesn't work
[2009/06/25 21:56:41] <fujin> heh
[2009/06/25 21:56:45] <fujin> ctso: not really :P
[2009/06/25 21:57:40] <n3kl> What does this mean: Fileserver module 'config' not mounted
[2009/06/25 21:58:27] <QMan> pastebin your fileserver.conf and the class trying to distribute the files

[2009/06/25 22:02:55] <QMan> n3kl: all your files live in /etc/puppet/files/mycoolfileslivehere.conf ?
[2009/06/25 22:03:22] @ jtimberman joined channel #puppet
[2009/06/25 22:03:28] <n3kl> They live in /config/{etc,var,usr} etc...
[2009/06/25 22:03:33] <n3kl> Is that where I am going wrong?
[2009/06/25 22:03:44] <QMan> yup :)
[2009/06/25 22:03:47] <fujin> ctso: I don't work on (or use) puppet at all, now; but I'm glad it still works
[2009/06/25 22:04:06] <QMan> n3kl: I'd recommend moving your /config/* directory to /etc/puppet/files/config/*
[2009/06/25 22:04:18] <n3kl> symlink?
[2009/06/25 22:04:31] <QMan> and change your source line to source => "puppet:///files/config/path/to/file"
[2009/06/25 22:04:38] <QMan> <shrug>
[2009/06/25 22:04:41] <QMan> might work :)
[2009/06/25 22:04:57] <QMan> you could change the path in [files] to /config/ if you really wanted
[2009/06/25 22:05:33] <QMan> but that might become annoying as you scale out past your sudo hello world example
[2009/06/25 22:05:48] <n3kl> alright, I will try that. When I use a source, I don't specify the server like, puppet://server/config files?
[2009/06/25 22:06:11] <ctso> fujin: aw, why no use puppet
[2009/06/25 22:06:14] <QMan> the three slashes in my example mean the files live on the server you connected to
[2009/06/25 22:06:32] <fujin> ctso: I work for Opscode, on Chef.
[2009/06/25 22:06:48] <QMan> it's functionally equivalent to "puppet://$server/files/"
[2009/06/25 22:07:04] <QMan> the files word maps to [files] in the fileserver.conf file
[2009/06/25 22:08:27] <ctso> fujin: oh. hah.. cool.. yea.. im heavily using/extending the node config tool u guys made (iclassify)
[2009/06/25 22:08:38] <fujin> ah yup cool
[2009/06/25 22:09:10] <jamesturnbull> ctso: ah cool - you publishing code?
[2009/06/25 22:13:04] <ctso> heh, well i put the stuff on github so far, it's not much, still in the middle of migrating all my servers over... will be the test of whether what i've been changing is any good...
[2009/06/25 22:13:28] <jamesturnbull> ctso: I just pushed your aptitude fix to the -dev list for comment btw - you'll probably get an emai;
[2009/06/25 22:16:12] <ctso> jamesturnbull: cool, thx, yeah.. i saw lak marked the ticket as "ready for testing", haven't gotten around to that though as it looked like i have some infrastructure to setup before i can run/make tests
