[2009/03/28 01:16:07] <TruPilot> Hi all :-)
[2009/03/28 01:16:30] <TruPilot> Is there documentation on how to preserve permissions from the master to the client/slave?
[2009/03/28 01:17:24] @ Quit: kevin_: "Leaving"
[2009/03/28 01:19:10] <TruPilot> JD?!? Cool :-)
[2009/03/28 01:19:17] <TruPilot> LTNS :-)
[2009/03/28 01:19:37] <TruPilot> I know - you're probably out doing things but Hi :-)
[2009/03/28 01:21:29] <TruPilot> Hmmm - it seems that Puppet is doing that by itself...
[2009/03/28 01:21:33] <TruPilot> Never mind :-)
[2009/03/28 01:21:35] <Djelibeybi> TruPilot: using which type? You can set permissions with the file{} type using the mode => parameter
[2009/03/28 01:22:11] <TruPilot> Djelibeybi: I want puppet to use the same permissions that are already on files on the master... In this case, I'm recursing through a web server directory
[2009/03/28 01:22:15] @ gettalong joined channel #puppet
[2009/03/28 01:22:33] <Djelibeybi> TruPilot: ah, ok. In which case, I have no idea! </!helpful>
[2009/03/28 01:23:09] <TruPilot> Djelibeybi: It seems that if puppet is creating files, it attempts to create them with the same permissions as the master if no specific permissions are specified.
[2009/03/28 01:23:49] <Djelibeybi> TruPilot: good to know!
[2009/03/28 01:23:56] <TruPilot> I am certainly not an authority on this, but from looking at the way Puppet is setting up permissions during my copy, it appears to be doing just what I'm describing.
[2009/03/28 01:26:37] <TruPilot> I'm setting myself up to trial a few OS's as VM's for new servers and I'm using Puppet to install my configuration and files - it's working quite nicely cause I know I can wipe a VM, install the new OS, then have Puppet place all the necessary files for me. After that, I can reliably test. I love it :-) It's not the fastest method to move files, but it sure is predictable and consistent. :-)
[2009/03/28 01:26:37] @ Quit: nevele: "Wow! A bug?"
[2009/03/28 01:26:58] <TruPilot> Yuck - too many open files! :-(
[2009/03/28 01:27:29] <Djelibeybi> TruPilot: Yeah, we're using puppet to configure ~1200 VMs
[2009/03/28 01:28:14] <TruPilot> Crud - ran into bug 961
[2009/03/28 01:30:09] <TruPilot> Let's see - upgrade - I think I'll be forced to...
[2009/03/28 01:31:40] <TruPilot> I just installed 0.24.7 from SRPM a couple weeks ago. No fun.
[2009/03/28 01:32:42] <jamesturnbull> TruPilot: what platform?
[2009/03/28 01:33:01] <jamesturnbull> Djelibeybi: afternoon
[2009/03/28 01:33:05] <TruPilot> jamesturnbull: FC6, F9, F10, C5.2
[2009/03/28 01:33:11] <TruPilot> FC6 is the master...
[2009/03/28 01:33:43] <jamesturnbull> TruPilot: go with 0.24.8 - #961 is fixed there and it perfroms better
[2009/03/28 01:33:44] <gepetto> jamesturnbull: TruPilot: #961 is http://projects.reductivelabs.com/issues/show/961 "Puppet - Bug #961: puppetd creating too many/not closing TCP connections - ReductiveLabs.com"
[2009/03/28 01:34:01] <Djelibeybi> jamesturnbull: hey. :) where were you yesterday evening? Tried calling.
[2009/03/28 01:34:05] @ Quit: fujin:
[2009/03/28 01:34:20] <jamesturnbull> Djelibeybi: had a little ... problem at work
[2009/03/28 01:34:31] <johnw> can puppet manage easy_install modules?
[2009/03/28 01:34:37] <Djelibeybi> jamesturnbull: ah, poo. I met with some of the wholesale guys on Friday afternoon
[2009/03/28 01:34:43] <jamesturnbull> Djelibeybi: looks like a large metal box which dispenses money
[2009/03/28 01:34:54] <jamesturnbull> johnw: eggs?
[2009/03/28 01:34:58] <johnw> yeah, eggs
[2009/03/28 01:35:14] <Djelibeybi> jamesturnbull: sounds like fun, fun, fun
[2009/03/28 01:35:34] <jamesturnbull> johnw: someone did write a provider but I never saw the code ... hmmm it was a python guy maybe garthk
[2009/03/28 01:35:43] <jamesturnbull> gepetto: seen garthk
[2009/03/28 01:35:43] <gepetto> jamesturnbull: nope!
[2009/03/28 01:36:14] <Djelibeybi> jamesturnbull: though, I didn't think you had anything to do with large metal boxes that dispense money...
[2009/03/28 01:36:27] <jamesturnbull> johnw: but if easy_install can list installed modules, and install and remove modules then a provider is easy
[2009/03/28 01:37:03] <jamesturnbull> Djelibeybi: let's guess what's been the news this week about such boxes?
[2009/03/28 01:37:11] <Djelibeybi> jamesturnbull: oh, right.
[2009/03/28 01:37:28] <Djelibeybi> jamesturnbull: still, didn't think that fell under your bailiwick any more.
[2009/03/28 01:38:23] <jamesturnbull> Djelibeybi: very much so - CERT function
[2009/03/28 01:38:43] <Djelibeybi> jamesturnbull: then I can imagine your week as being just *thrilling*
[2009/03/28 01:40:27] <johnw> jamesturnbull: found your thread with garthk
[2009/03/28 01:41:22] <jamesturnbull> johnw: oh link in there is a reasonable hack
[2009/03/28 01:42:09] <TruPilot> Someone forgot to bump the Version in conf/redhat/puppet.spec
[2009/03/28 01:42:31] <jamesturnbull> TruPilot: didn't forget
[2009/03/28 01:42:41] <jamesturnbull> TruPilot: the spec file is a convenience
[2009/03/28 01:42:51] <jamesturnbull> TruPilot: we rely on the packagers to handle this
[2009/03/28 01:43:15] <TruPilot> Wouldn't it be easy though to make a template for the spec file and let it automatically manage that?
[2009/03/28 01:43:37] <Djelibeybi> TruPilot: the 0.24.8 RPMs are in EPEL-testing
[2009/03/28 01:44:09] <TruPilot> Djelibeybi: It's easier for me to just build a SRPM
[2009/03/28 01:44:31] <Djelibeybi> TruPilot: as you wish. :) You could just do an rpmbuild --rebuild from the SRPM from EPEL. :)
[2009/03/28 01:44:33] <jamesturnbull> TruPilot: It's not mainline - by preference I'd remove the spec file - but people do use it
[2009/03/28 01:46:00] <TruPilot> ok - it took me about 15 seconds to build the SRPM
[2009/03/28 01:47:28] <TruPilot> Now I have /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch/puppet-0.24.8-3.fc6.noarch.rpm and /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch/puppet-server-0.24.8-3.fc6.noarch.rpm
[2009/03/28 01:47:44] <TruPilot> All I have to do now is copy those RPM's to the other hosts and rpm -uvh :-)
[2009/03/28 01:50:24] <Djelibeybi> TruPilot: you don't have a yum repository? :)
[2009/03/28 01:50:44] <Djelibeybi> I can recommend puppet's yumrepo{} type and package{} type -- get it to upgrade itself. :)
[2009/03/28 01:54:25] @ Quit: MrHeavy__: "Leaving"
[2009/03/28 01:54:48] <TruPilot> Djelibeybi: I might do that after I settle in on my new web servers. Till then, it's no biggie to make RPM's. I'm already upgraded.
[2009/03/28 01:55:10] <TruPilot> What causes puppetd --test to report "err: State got corruped" ?
[2009/03/28 01:57:18] <TruPilot> Or ... the better question - how do I fix it when it says that?
[2009/03/28 02:00:05] <TruPilot> I think I know what caused it in my case - Ctrl-C, but I would have expected that puppetd would have been able to handle an INTR

[2009/03/28 12:59:07] <BobbyBee> Hi all, I have an environment with over 2000 Sun Servers. On each of these machines is an area (/opt/sysadmin/) where all of our administrative scripts, utilities and tools live ..Because traditionally we have been using push copy mechanisms (scp, rcp etc) we have found that we have a lot of systems that are running old versions of scripts and because of the push mechanism, we sometimes miss...
[2009/03/28 12:59:09] <BobbyBee> ...machines that are currently down or are experiencing network issues...My plan is to create a central server running SVN to manage all the utilities/ scripts etc with proper versioning and then use puppet or cfengine to effectively get the /opt/sysadmin folder distributed out to all machines (ideally using a pull system). I appreciate that my simple requirement is barely scratching the...
[2009/03/28 12:59:10] <BobbyBee> ...surface of what puppet (or indeed cfengine) could provide, but wanted to know whether this was a simple thing to set up or indeed if its even possible with these products ? (maybe i should be looking at something else)
